Will Needle-free Injection Vaccines Stop Polio Outbreak
Poliovirus has been largely eliminated in many parts of the world due to extensive vaccination campaigns. However, poliovirus continues to circulate in several countries, including the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
According to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Afghanistan is currently facing an ongoing outbreak of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1).
In 2024, the number of WPV1 cases in Afghanistan rose significantly, reaching a total of 24 cases. So far this year, the GPEI has confirmed two cases.
Texas Declares Measles Outbreak Over
Throughout 2025, approximately thirty-two measles outbreaks have been reported in the United States, according to the latest data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
One notable outbreak occurred in the South Plains Region of Texas.
However, as of today, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) says this year's measles outbreak in western Texas has officially ended. It has been over 42 days since a new case was reported in any of the counties that previously experienced ongoing transmission.

Safer Childhood Vaccines Task Force Revived
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently announced the reinstatement of the Task Force on Safer Childhood Vaccines, a federal panel created to improve the safety, quality, and oversight of vaccines administered to American children.

Over $900 Million Funds Advance Defenses Against Approaching New World Screwworms
When the U.S. CDC announced the resurgence of New World Screwworm (NWS) in the Americas in October 2024, the flies that produce larvae that feed on living tissue were still thousands of miles away from the United States border.
However, the situation has rapidly changed in 2025, with the the CDC and the USDA confirming the detection of NWS in northern Mexico.
NWS is a significant threat to Texas, the largest cattle-producing state.
Novel Polio Vaccines on the Horizon
Since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) was established in 1988, it has presented a roadmap to achieving a world free of all forms of poliovirus.
For 2022-2026, the GPEI strategy has two clear goals: Interrupt All Poliovirus Transmission in Endemic Countries, and Stop Transmission of Variant Poliovirus and Prevent Outbreaks in Non-endemic countries.
These GPEI goals are being challenged as 39 countries were recently identified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as being at-risk for poliovirus.
Dental Floss-Based Vaccination Found Effective
Since many children and about 10% adults have a fear of needles and cite this concern for avoiding vaccines, clinically known as trypanophobia, recent research has identified another immunization option.
Researchers have confirmed that the oral cavity is a convenient location for vaccination and is the target area for an innovative needle-free vaccine.
