Over the past few decades, mosquito-driven outbreaks of Chikungunya disease have occurred in approximately 100 countries, and many adults have been diagnosed with severe cases.
For example, in the Region of the Americas, there were 236 Chikungunya-related fatalities in 2024.
And in 2025, the Pan American Health Organization has already reported 523 Chikungunya cases in Brazil.

Oral Cholera Vaccine Stockpile Fills-Up

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently announced very positive news regarding producing oral cholera vaccines (OCV).
The WHO published its multi-country cholera outbreak report, External Situation Report #22, which revealed that in December 2024, the average OCV stockpile rose to 5.9 million doses, its highest level since 2013.
As of 2025, the WHO has prequalified Dukoral®, Shanchol™, and Euvichol®, Euvichol-S OCV vaccines.

Severe Zika Infection Causes 13-fold Greater Mortality Risk in Children

Last year, the Region of the Americas reported over 42,127 Zika virus (ZIKV) cases, many including children. Some of these young Zika patients died from severe infections in their mother's wombs or immediately after birth. 
The findings of a new Original Investigation conducted in May 2024 should empower insights that develop protocols to prevent early mortality and improve child survival during Zika outbreaks.

4.7% of Returning Symptomatic Europeans May Have Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika Infections

A substantive study published in the Journal of Travel Medicine and Infectious Disease shows that arboviral infections caused by mosquito bites have risen in Europe over the past decades.
This systematic review and meta-analysis (Volume 64, March–April 2025) highlights the growing threat of chikungunya, dengue, and Zika viruses to international travelers and close contacts when returning home to Europe.
This meta-analysis, published online on January 10, 2025, of returning symptomatic travelers to Europe, showed a disease prevalence of 4.7%.
